Ted knew what was up and wanted humans to make the conscious decision to not destroy themselves. Hitler obviously had the industrial and economics game perfected, but was going to lead his people into a technological nightmare. Probably better than the one we're headed into but still not ideal. I think Ted saw that we have to at least acknowledge that technology will be the death of us, even if I don't think we should completely do away with it.
To me, population is one of the biggest issues for us. There are far too many people for any even slightly utopian society to be attempted. I think we could have technological endeavors without the mess we have now if there were simply less people to govern.
