The first thing you learn in any kind of tactical training when you're trying to cover someone with a firearm, is Mind Your Distance. My father once taught me "Watch yourself if they draw down on you and keep moving in they're trying to force your hand and no good can come of it, they may be crazy, stupid, or just looking for an excuse." The Dad was supposedly a retired/part time LEO or both in any case most certainly a good old boy... you don't walk up within arms reach of a threat waving a loaded shotgun in front of you like a walking stick... unless you want an excuse to kill the motherfucker and make it look like he grabbed your gun... for the camera which was rolling courtesy of the the armed participant in the hunt who was also just a reach away from covering his corner of the kill box.

Lawfag here. Felony murder is a pretty interesting topic. Not a criminal lawyer, so this is basically just what I remember from law school. I don't know how many states have felony murder laws. Maybe all of them. Felony murder basically means, if you commit a felony, and someone dies, it's murder. In a lot of cases, where the rubber meets the road, it's pretty fucked up. But it's designed to ensure maximum deference, esp. for people contemplating crimes that necessarily result in a threat to human life. Like for example, if you help your friend commit armed robbery, you might have thought you were just signing on for armed robbery, but if your friend decides to shoot the clerk, you are. now charged with murder. On the other hand, maybe you rob a bank and rig a radio triggered bomb to an employee in order to negotiate for escape, w/out pursuit, and the bomb goes off. Pretty clear in the second case it's not so unfair to charge as murder, but in the first case, it may be that people aren't even aware of felony murder laws.
Now what's fucked up about this fucking article is, they don't even say what the predicate offense is. That would tell us a lot about what the prosecution's theory of the case is.

Not *knowing* what happened, I am very cynical about this case, i.e. kind of seems like "political prisoners," and it kind of seems like they're charging this guy with felony murder to get him to "cooperate," i.e. give them favorable testimony. Last I checked, driving isn't illegal and filming isn't illegal. Maybe driving and filming is illegal, but for felony murder there has to be some sort of causation. They can't charge you because you were felony speeding past the house where a guy was murdering his wife.
