From an epidemiological standpoint it isn't.
COVID-19 had a much larger initial viral load into completely non-immune host groups, the flu, as a seasonal virus itself, has many biological immune factors which tend to retard its growth heavily. If you too any normal influenza virus and introduced it to human host groups in a scenario of no natural immunity, it would kill almost 100 times as many people as COVID has killed....and we have historical proof of this with extremely rare flu strains which human host groups had zero natural immunity to.
So the point is that COVID-19, for a coronavirus that humans have no natural immunity, the death toll is far lower than it would be with a common influenza virus if presented with the same non-immunue scenario.
