There is no mistake there were horrible times in USSR , but it had 80 years of nations time invested and its collapse was a biggest disaster for all involved. It could have transitional to more liberal and economically free country normal way, without the "shock".

People don't miss Gulags (it was thing of the past anyway at time) or lack of food choice, people miss the Greatness of belonging to real world power, unity of the nations and losing much of social, economic, scientific, and every other progress the country made in 20th century.

The opposite was true - people all around Russia already WERE starving, and thus it was required to amass all the food and redistribute among different regions.
