We tolerate landlords in physical space because physical space is fixed supply.
There is a limited amount of space, so someone is always going to own it, whether it be the state, landlords, whoever.
Rent is unavoidable here.
The cancer is taking variable supply resources, and using legislative fiat to artificially turn them into fixed supply resources in order to establish rental like markets where they would not be able to exist organically.
If a business activity cannot be profitable without infinite restrictions on the thought of others, then it doesn't deserve to be profitable.
The entire point of any economic system is to prevent resources being wasted on such activities.
Art should be a pastime, not a business activity, and trying to hamhandedly bend the laws in order to artificially prop it up as a business activity is what allows media to run rampant, "X as a service model", cloud computing, and the various other forms of non land based rent-seeking we are seeing today.

This should not be a partisan issue.
People in favour of competitive markets should oppose the government intervention required to prop up these otherwise unprofitable ventures.
