Right of center: Tends to be more family oriented, and more likely to help directly and locally. Donating or giving to the poor. This used to be a major function of the churches as well.
I was a poor kid growing up, and sometimes church people would drop off about $100-200 worth of food.
Left of Center: Less family oriented. Wants the government to handle "Donating or giving to the poor". The problem is, the funds are often mishandled, and not all tax-givers agree with where the money goes. This also removes the "good-nature" of one man giving to another. Since it comes from the government, it becomes a right rather than something nice done by someone else.

If you want to contribute to society, and have the means to, we create charities for those unable to take care of themselves. If you're destitute, you should live destitute.
