There's different freemason orders. Some are esoteric jewish cabals, others are just middle aged dudes who lack any other sense of community in the modern atomised world. 33rd degree is the one I hear most often related to conspiracies but there are some fairly 'normal' freemasons that are just fraternal groups that survived the passage of time. America used to have a ton of similar things like 'mutual aid societies', which were usually exclusive to race or country of origin (i.e. an Irish mutual aid society) because there was no welfare gibs then. New immigrants would join a mutual aid society for financial assistance and community with the expectation they pass the hospitality on to new members later.
Masons survived this era because the primary condition is simply belief in a God (not even sure they specify it having to be Christian god, just belief in a higher power).
