The world-renowned philosopher and author of the bestselling Justice explores the central question of our time: What has become of the common good?
These are dangerous times for democracy. We live in an age of winners and losers, where the odds are stacked in favor of the already fortunate. Stalled social mobility and entrenched inequality give the lie to the American credo that "you can make it if you try". The consequence is a brew of anger and frustration that has fueled populist protest and extreme polarization, and led to deep distrust of both government and our fellow citizens--leaving us morally unprepared to face the profound challenges of our time.
World-renowned philosopher Michael J. Sandel argues that to overcome the crises that are upending our world, we must rethink the attitudes toward success and failure that have accompanied globalization and rising inequality. Sandel shows the hubris a meritocracy generates among the winners and the harsh judgement it imposes on those left behind, and traces the dire consequences across a wide swath of American life. He offers an alternative way of thinking about success--more attentive to the role of luck in human affairs, more conducive to an ethic of humility and solidarity, and more affirming of the dignity of work. The Tyranny of Merit points us toward a hopeful vision of a new politics of the common good.
Meritocracy breeds sociopaths. Elites used to think they had an obligation to the rest of society. They raised armies and were patrons of the arts. Modern elites are told they "earned" everything because of their "merit" and that means they have no obligations to the rest of society.
Becoming an elite is more open to people than any point in history, but elites display contempt for the rest of society.
you got any facts to back that up
I went to an expensive and elite private university with a bunch of kikes.
Noblesse oblige is a French expression used in English meaning that nobility extends beyond mere entitlements and requires the person who holds such a status to fulfill social responsibilities. For example, a primary obligation of a nobleman could include generosity towards those around him
i know /g/ related stuff... anti-meritocracy is absolutely destroying the FOSS community.
It wasnt always that way.
And dont think this corruption is unique to our time. It is the component that has preceded the death of every empire.
When the virtues of Goodness are ignored by those who seek to profiteer and owe loyalties to anyone but themselves, the civilization dies.
not the real world
The irony here is nothing in this retarded society is based on real merit.
Sociopaths are useless outside their childish social games.
There are a few ways to look at meritocracy. From a tech perspective, sure you want to have the smartest and savviest people working on projects. Techies are autists. The problem is when you're looking at social industries like finance, corporate management, and law. That's where you have cold blooded sharks actively trying to kill their countries.
Where do you think meritocrats come from? The US chooses rulers based on SAT scores.
Michael Sandel is s fucking fraud and his ideas have no merit, not a surprise he would stand in opposition to meritocracy.
Fuck this cunt

Have some fucking pride
Meritocracy by itself doesn’t do anything for you. Imperial China was a meritocracy in its bureaucracy but the country still stagnated. The real problem with philosopher faggots is the tendency to treat the world as something “smooth” when in fact it is quite “lumpy.” The theory doesn’t match the facts but they are too lazy to gather the data
I wonder if this faggot hopes his book will be considered "good"?
What meritocracy? Everything is based on who you know rather than what merit you actually have
We only pretend its a meritocracy
>elites display contempt for the rest of society.
Simply not true. Infact the exact opposite is the case. Take for example the recent riots. Who is showing the contempt for society there? Communists want to enjoy someone else's labour. They are not pro worker they are pro lazy.
In the postmodern world the left has dropped the worker in favour of the entitled who expects their place on the boardroom simply by reason of the colour of their skin.
HE DOESN'T CARE HE HAS TENURE!
confirmed faggot
>We only pretend its a meritocracy
thats the whole idea of the book from what i understand.
No one questions why criminal elites have billions of dollars because we have somehow agreed the "earned it" and just worked harder.
making it through the pipeline doesn't mean shit. america was built by meritocracy not your academic bullshit
>Take for example the recent riots
the same riots that were endorsed and funded by every major corporation and elite...yeah not quite a good example you gave there.
Amazon (elite) is giving tons of money to "BLM"
>Categories: Jewish Philosophers
You're implying that those that want to rise in those industries would have the greater good as their motivator.
No, they just want the rewards because they're black or a woman or a Muslim. They become dead weight only there to fulfil quotas.
most people don't care
>go to work
>come home
>have food
>water
>heat
>medicine
fuck off with that revolution bullshit
leftists will never understand happiness
>The US chooses rulers based on SAT scores.
lol, no
its called LEGACY PREFERENCE

also fuck of to Zig Forums. not everyone wants to be bezos. its just part of the game that he exists.
It is obvious to anyone paying attention that nepotism, and now "social equality" is the real plague.
Any true right winger understands that Sandel is mostly right, but for the wrong reasons.
We moved from aristocracy to meritocracy because it's a means for corrupt PMC bureaucrats to steadily inflate their ranks with capable individuals, to keep the situation favorable, prolonging their comfy parasite status.
Especially in multicult democracies, "merit" is just another means to keep whatever majority group toothless; in the U.S., that's rural white right wingers. Talent from these areas is purposefully absorbed into cities via the allure of a urbanite career lifestyle. Rural areas are kept worse off.
Aristocracy is the European way, that's why leftists destroyed it.
>Rural areas are kept worse off.
as some who moved away from the city you couldn't be more wrong. you can choose where you live.
As I said, these corporations are infested with diversity hires and leftists. The elite selects most of its members without using meritocracy.
Take for example amazon. Bezos got were he is on meritocracy. But as the company grows and grows the practice of hiring is taken out of his hands. Soon it ends up the responsibility of an army of college indoctrinated HR managers. They will hire on the basis of merit and hire on the basis of race and sex etc..
people think that stopped though?
find me a billionaire who doesn't have a charitable foundation
find me a college building without a donor's name on it
thank you superiors you envious faggots
Your personal anecdote doesn't change how the system works.
It's not like the executives at the largest companies have links to elite institutions or that the top lawyers tend to come from the same small group of schools. Oh wait.
Sure, there's discrimination against Asians, but it mostly means that instead of HYPS that they have to move down a peg and go to Chicago, Duke, or Rice. They aren't getting denied at the Ivy League and then enrolling at ITT Tech.
>everyone wants to live the urbanite lifestyle
haha okay
