my school tried teaching black history in 8th grade. it was nothing but tribes killing each other and enslaving the losers. they stopped teaching it after 3 years because black parents complained that it was too racist. you can't make these people happy.

If by "ancient", you mean "occurring in the time frame between the end of the neolithic and the fall of the western Roman Empire", you weren't taught about "ancient" African civilizations because there weren't any except for Meroe.

The glorious sub-Saharan African civilizations that Henry Louis Gates likes to talk about weren't "ancient". They were medieval. The most notable ones were all associated with Islam, and didn't get rolling until after the 1100's.

I mean all countries mostly focus on their own history. No experience with communism = topic glossed over. The same thing happens in my country with slavery, it's mentioned, but not really emphasized.

At the very least you can cover the Zulus, Boers, and other shit like that, especially in military history. More than that, there really isn't much literature to collect, and the achievements of black people arnt as historically or culturally significant as Mesopotamia.
