To preface this: I don't blame Japs for being paranoid about retarded foreigners in their country. Sure you can meme about US soldiers being horrible, but the English teachers on the Jet program are by far the worst, regular English teachers coming a close second.
For those that don't know, the Jet program gives foreigners Japanese taxpayer money to "teach English" 80% of the time the teachers cannot teach English to save their life and just read out of textbooks. They are OVERPAID to high hell and are usually woke kids fresh out of University, which means as soon as they have one bad experience they play a victim narritive.
It's no better in English schools, people who can only speak English will rant about how shit it is in Japan and create woke feedback loops (but don't worry, if they're from the US they'll be shitting on the US too).
So how do you survive if you wanna work there? Learn the language before and while you go there. Look for others that can speak the language. Look for others that talk about self improvement and other positive topics and not just how the Yamanote is sooooo busy and that Ikebukuro is toooo hard to navigate.
If that sounds like too much hard work then stay home and defend your country and just go to Japan for a holiday instead.

I've lived there. If you learn the language to at least a functional level and try to integrate to some extent it's comfy. Otherwise you will be hated. Most foreigners didn't last more than 3 months.

Multiple reasons
1- You're not Japanese, foreigners are known to bail at the drop of a hat when things get tough (3-11 tsunami comes to mind)
2- If you're living in a big city like most foreigners do then it's not even you that's the issue. Big cities in Japan chew up and spit out relationships like crazy. You could have sex with a different person 3-5 times a week but you'll never get a long term relationship from them. It's just a handshake.
3- You never knew/had to know how to make friends so now you're confused as to what to do: this will be the most likely scenario. People have such a hard time making friends when they move to a new country. You're going to have to make the effort to do it. Once I stopped beating myself up for not having friends and starting group events on Facebook/Whatvever then things got more and more fun.
Group events are easy to make to get lots of people to join since there's no social pressure of meeting up one to one.

If you are going there to live awhile, learn the language and go in knowing that each region has its own peculiarities, just like everywhere else.

From my experience, interactions with store clerks were pretty brief and impersonal. Just go get the stuff you want to buy and go to the cashier. If you can't speak Japanese, they'll try hard to understand you.
