Because we're in the middle of allergy season and the average person can't discern between allergies and the nothing level symptoms of most coronavirus infections. Given how far the virus has spread the most effective method is simply to assume everyone is infected and wear a mask in the off chance you do have it and are coughing.

And yes, I typically do wear masks when I catch the cold or flu since I don't enjoy screwing strangers over for two weeks at a time just by coughing

This is saying that if you cough directly on a thing, that thing will receive the most of what you coughed out, but if you divert that cough to go in various different directions but still focus on the area in front of the mouth then that area will now receive less of the particulates in the cough. The particles still come out but go in different directions but we should not aim to collect samples from those various other directions.

Pretty sure a bacteria culture is not the same thing as a virus.
