How on earth is it not a prestigious university? It's in the top 50 universities in the world, it's one of the best universities in Australia with regards to employment, there are a shit ton of Chinese international students there (about 20% of all students in 2019 at UQ were from China, it will probably increase more this year).

Most people have never been to UQ and will never see it. They don't care about rankings and couldn't be bothered to check. They have to judge based on stereotype. The stereotype is that Queensland is dumb and uneducated, like our version of the American South or Florida. And it ties straight onto UQ given the obvious name implications.

You still haven't addressed the fact that there are lots of chinese students at uq, which indicates that it is prestigious, because the Chinese students tend to go to the universities they deem prestigious. UQ is one of these.

If you go to p16, you'll see that UNSW, USYD and Umelb are significantly more reliant on Chinese students than UQ. Only ANU is slightly less reliant on Chinese students than UQ. Even if you're measuring prestige by Chinese, my argument that the big 4 are more prestigious largely holds.
And chinese are strange. They want to go to Usyd because some of them thought Hogwarts was filmed there. Their ideas of prestige are far more focused on STEM and weird shit, they're not representative of Australia generally.

If Chinese students can't get into an elite university in China, they choose to study abroad, usually in Australia, Canada, UK, USA. The reason they do this is to make them more employable back in China. They generally choose the more prestigious universities in Australia like ANU, UMelb, UNSW, USyd, UQ etc because that makes them very employable back in China.
