My grandfather got back from Vietnam. He was a merchant marine who rode up & down the rivers, dropping off supplies to US military camps.
He manned a machine gun on a boat, and took fire from the treelines more or less every single trip he made. Although he had no confirmed kills, he likely killed a lot of gooks with that MG.
When he came home to the US, he was spit on by crowds of protestors on his way home, and called a baby killer.
Threw away everything from his service.

He knows with certainty that he is fighting endless war with no real objectives for abstract political reasons. There's absolutely nothing at stake for him yet he still risks his life and kills for something. Veterans of past wars could at least believe that they're fighting for something real to them. It's no wonder modern vets go insane, the futility of it all is so obvious. He could have done dozen more tours of duty and his service would not have mattered shit for security of him or his loved ones.

It depended on where you were. My grandfather went in through operation torch and then up to battle of monte cassino. He didn't really see bad shit though. His brother's platoon got caught right in the pocket of the ardennes offensive and just about his entire platoon was wiped out. He was a PTSD hernit for the next 60 years.

1 brother "only killed jews", fought from 39-45, survived the war and was the most relaxed guy i ever saw
