In case you didn't know, a number of Greeks were communists since 1949 and before, so no the West didn't "push" anything on them. They fought a bloody civil war and the Americans dropped napalms on the communists. The British also send army to defend Athens from communists in 1945 when they might have taken it after the Germans left. During most of the Cold War Greeks were generally right-wing under Karamanlis, although the remaining communists still created problems. After 1974 they went full socialist economically and also supported random insurgents around the world.

Greeks never achieved much in their history. You think too highly of them. Most of their ancient culture was borrowed from Egypt. They fought among themselves like rabid dogs for centuries until Macedon subdued them and FORCED them to unite under the Macedonian banner. When Romans started their wars against them, Athens and Sparta were among the first to switch sides and respectively fall to Roman conquest, while Macedon had to fight the combined forces of Rome, Athens and what was left of the Spartans after the Roman conquest. After the division of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire was ruled by Emperors which were of Thracian descend, not Greek. During Justinian, the Byzantine Empire managed to expand in Italy, Carthage and Southern Spain. Greeks undermined the Justinian Dynasty and eventually replaced it with the Heraklian Dynasty. During that time the gayreeks lost the Near East, Egypt, Carthage, Southern Spain and parts of Anatolia to Arabs and most of the Peninsula to Bulgars and other Slavs. From the crumbles emerged the Macedonian Dynasty which rebuilt parts of the Byzantine Empire, making it wealthy again. The Macedonian Dynasty was later deposed and replaced with Greek Dynasties which again managed to bring about the collapse of the Byzantine Empire. They were so fucking retarded that they gave the Turks lands, gold and weaponry to make a state and an army. The Turks turned against them and fucked them up, culminating with the fall of Constantinople. They were such great lovers of Turks that they quickly acted to become noblemen and suck on the Sultan's tit. During the course of the Ottoman occupation, many attempts were made to free the lands from the Turks. Many times the revolts were crushed by Greeks employed as generals in the Ottoman Army.
