Patriotism instilled in the citizenry of a state is necessary for a state to be strong and to thrive. A thriving state provides the most benefit to individual citizens and their families. Better healthcare, better education, more job opportunities, stronger community ties, etc. Even if you look at it from an individual point of view, patriotism and nationalism are beneficial.
