Whats the origin of 'nigger'?
It came from negro, how did it turn into nigger? Was it derogatory since its inception, or was it more of a phonetical southern thing?

When I was a kid I remember reading that it meant ignorant and that it was their word that the white people later picked up because it sounded similar to "negro" and then it flipped against them and turned hateful but I was never really sure how true that was.
