Nuclear family is a stable model that gives a tightly knit group of people conditions for success. When you have both parents in the home, it's a predictor for finishing school, getting a job, avoiding criminality, etc. Nuclear families work pretty damn well.

But with huge cost of living, inability to have homes and both parents working it increases stress, has encouraged more couples to go childless. Meanwhile the neoliberals encourage immigration as a way of propping up the economy as opposed to encouraging more kids they would rather bring in others.

The main idea when someone says nuclear family is that there is a mother and father working together to actively raise their children. When people want to defend it they are specifically defending this ideal because without a father one lacks discipline and strength and without a mother one lacks compassion and understanding.
