Protection from what? If somebody's gonna hurt you they're gonna do it regardless of your incompetent customer (yes, we are paying for the airport when we fly) service. All you people do is bark at people for not doing YOUR job of putting back trays, get mad at people when they ask a question or forget to take something off, or pull somebody aside if you felt they looked at you the wrong way (or if it's someone you'd like to pat down) None of you go beyond the call of duty, if you even do that.

Private security has the same failure rates as TSA, if a test is being run on them they usually tell the company beforehand so they put their best screeners on the xray. lots of cheating. They also can get fired much easier than federal employment.

I don't see them as terribly useful, but my experiences with the TSA have been reasonably good. When my kids were tiny, we'd be whisked off to a short line. There's an occasional gruff person, but most of them are friendly enough if you are.

The TSA is mostly just a big post-9/11 societal cope. Most of that airport security is just there as "security theater" which is to say that its there to give people the feeling of security. We could probably get rid of most of the security measures and be pretty secure. The vast majority of terrorist plots are all thwarted long before they reach the airport anyway.

Same here mate. I made it to an airport in Japan once for a domestic flight about 20 min before my flight left. They took me straight to my flight. Probably my biggest gaijin smash of my stay but it just goes to show much better everything runs over there.
