It very much has a spirituality, although much of that aspect has been buried post enlightenment. Something that's often not considered, is that Northern Africa was for a time part of Christendom, but was cleaved in half by Islam. If Northern Africa, Byzantium, and Spain hadn't have been colonized by the Islamic colonizer / settlers, we would likely have some very different ideas around the idea of race, and it's arguable that Northern Africa and as far East as present timeline Syria would have been considered part of Greater Europe.
