In the beginning of the pandemic China pretty much bought up the mask supply, even going so far as to ordering Chinese companies abroad to hoard supplies and send them to China.
This means there was a severe shortage of masks and PPE in western nations.
When the virus took hold in western nations the governments had no choice but to tell people not to worry about masks because ‘they didn’t work people’
However they do work.
They lied because the only alternative was saying ‘yeah masks work and are extremely important for stopping the spread of the virus but shit we don’t have any sorry guys’
Imagine the civil unrest that would have followed suit.

So they did nothing out of the ordinary in the beginning when they said not to wear masks, which was why people believed them. Pretty much this. There is no defining standard for what kind of mask to wear. There is no formal guide for how to wear, treat, and dispose of said mask. In theory, used masks are a hazmat and need to be dealt with appropriately.

No, they recommend against healthy people wearing N95-99 respirators. It’s common sense that wearing a normal mask will lessen the spread of droplets from people’s mouths. Also we’ve known since February that the incubation period can be up to two weeks, so there’s simply no logic in telling ‘healthy’ people not to wear masks because they could be asymptotic spreaders.
The problem is that they made absolutely no effort to differentiate between respirators and normal face masks.

My uncle had COPD. We could tell when his CO2 levels were too high because he would start talking like he was out of his mind. When you wear a mask, you are not able to exhale your CO2 as effeciently. It builds up inside the mask and you keep reinhaling it. Pay attention the next time you wear a mask for an extended time.
