My very traditional grandmother had hair that long. Raised 8 kids. Always wore a dress. Never worked outside the home. Then my grandfather died when she was in her 60s. First thing she did was cut it down to the scalp. She bought pants for the first time in her life. Never wore a dress again. Traveled a bit with her daughters. Said she finally felt free.
Asked her about her hair once. She said it was heavy, hot, hard to maintain, and hurt her scalp when put up in a bun out of her way. She only kept it long because of local culture and husband's religious beliefs.
