The idea that "dumb Americans value freedom over wearing a mask (most of which aren't N95s)" is not the biggest reason for the spread. The reason is because mass congregation venues like beaches and bars weren't shut down or done so way too late and for not long enough, and they weren't because they'd cut into state coffers so instead they sacrificed the lives of thousands to keep their money rolling in.
