They are playing their supporters. They want to break up the country and they need angry, brainwashed NPC's in their states to support them. That's why the false narrative is so important. If they win, they'd be expected to do something. They'd much rather lose and foster a sense of loss and suffering in their people... then slowly introduce the idea of going their own way as a solution.

Coastal liberals dislike Trump but what they really hate is you. They're like spoiled college students who are angry at their awkward family and embarrassed that they are associated with them. One day they get the idea to cut off all contact, disown them, and try to be on their own. It'll go as expected.
