How do you think about "korean martial arts"?
How do you think about "korean martial arts"?
The problem of the korean martial arts.
Basically true korean martial arts are
Ssireum, Gungdo (archery) and about Taekkyon.
Ssireum is korean wrestling similar to continental Mongolian wrestling and this is true korean traditions so as korean archery as related continental Mongolian archery.
However about Taekkyon. Historical records regarding Taekkyon are scant and ambiguous.
There is no description of 'Taekkyon' in any of the history books of the Korean Peninsula, such as "Samguk Sagi," "Samguk Iji," "Goryeo History," "Goryeo History Briefing," "Goryeo History Section," and "Chosun Dynasty True Record," and there is no description of 'Taekhyun,' and there are no schools, sects, traditional books, or scrolls that can be traced back to ancient times as like a Japanese martial arts or Chinese martial arts has.
And in many case of study of korean martial arts, Subak may refer to the old Korean martial art of taekkyeon, but historians are uncertain since little is known and recorded about it. It is acknowledged.
Subak itself is unknown things, it’s found "only the word" in some of korean historical record. But there is no specific explanation of records what kind of technique an form is it.
this remains a conjecture, as there is zero actual documentation of such in Korean records. Also There also remains no known documentation of specific military training by the Hwarang.
the techniques and forms of "modern Taekkyon " are the new invented traditions adopted from teakwondo, after ww2.
Modern tekkyeon and original tekkyeon (National game of korea using foot) is basically different things.
Even the "Taekkyon Federation" completely deny any connection between Taekwondo and Taekkyon, denying that Taekwondo has received any whatsoever influence from Taekkyon.
The problem with Taekwondo is that they clams that Teakwondo is the originated from taekkyeon. In real, teakwondo is originated from mostly Shoto kan karate.(sports karate and removed punch move.)
Original Taekkyeon/THTAIK-KYEN-HA-KI which performed in Joseon dynasty
Was form of the traditional "game" between two players, chefly with the feet. They take their positions with their feet apart, facing each other, and each endeavors to kick the other's foot from under him. A player may take one step backward with either positions. One leads with a kick at one of his opponent's legs. It’s hardly classified as martial arts.
Song Deok-gi (1893–1987) who was the main preserver of Taekkyon during the 20th century, writes in the preface of his only book: "It cannot be said for sure when and how Taekkyon came into existence, but until the end of the Korean kingdom, certain people did Taekkyon together."
There is no actual hustrical record of form of original taekyon as actual martial arts.
there is usually no case that karate organization denying that karate was originated in Okinawa island which connected Chinese martial arts.
however Taekwondo and Tekkyeon frequently change it's origins.
This is main problem of here.
And how about most of modern korean Martial arts except Ssireum, Gungdo and Taekkyon?
Most Koreans learned Japanese martial arts during the occupation period, which eventually evolved into modern Korean martial arts. These include Tae Kwon Do, Soo Bahk Do, Tang Soo Do, Kuk Sul Do, Moo Duk Kwan, Hapkido, Choi Kwang-Do, GongKwon Yusul, Kuk Sool Won, Hwa Rang Do, and Kumdo.
The main indicator of their Japanese origin is in their uniform, ranking system, and rules. Traditional Korean clothing (Hanbok) has no belt or indicator of grade. Belts used in judo and karate, to include the color code and Geup (Kyu) / Dan (rank) system were adopted wholesale by the Koreans. Rules, including bowing to the flag, and to the master* come directly from the influence Japanese martial arts.
there is usually no case that karate organization denying that karate was originated in Okinawa island which connected Chinese martial arts.
however Taekwondo and Tekkyeon frequently change it's origins.
This is main problem of here.
So as we can see most of korean martial arts is nothing but a invented traditions except Ssireum, and Gungdo (archery).
Nips > Norks > Chinks > South Panfaces

The only real thing you get out of most oriental "combat skills" is disraprin and that's it.
I've won every fight against blackbelts in several disciplines because it's moreso a mental art than a practical one.
