No. It's more complicated than that. I'm sure what you describe is a component of it. And its probably more true today than in the past. But historically god has been something much more significant.

Think about this, allegedly Jesus was the messiah. He started his ministry late in his 20s and it only lasted three to six years. In that short time he objectively became the most important person in human history. Who could do that but a messiah? On top of that, who does the Bible say are children of Satan and continue to be the most hated group to this day and throughout history? People who believe are also filled with the Holy Spirit and they can all tell you feeling God's presence is a distinct feeling. There's lots of more technical arguments in regards to things like creation that imply intelligent design too, but at some point with science you're forced to admit there are unknowns and require faith that we'll explain it all eventually. So why not put your faith into something that gives comfort? If God was benevolent he'd make worshiping him a good thing and it is.

Making a "God is real" argument can take up entire books and there's lots of angles, but I think not believing in God and treating science as a spiritual replacement things is the low IQ take.

The universe also can't be eternal because that would mean there is an infinite chain of causes stretching forever into the past, like an atheist version of "turtles all the way down".
