People go on about the Brazilification of the US, but I don't think I've seen much historical context on how Brazil became the example of what can go wrong it has today.

Democracy happened. Large swathes of underclass were given the right to vote and things collapsed.
South American underclass was always much larger than in the US where things are going to shit gradually with constant influx of the element that dragged down South America.

I am aware of that, I'm just curious about some of the history behind it.

The US maintained segregation while Brazil pursued a policy of aggressive muttification. They also had way more nigs, so the results were disastrous.
