Public services are beyond saving. People working in public positions know they cant be fired. So they will do the minimum just not to be fired. This results in the services being some of the most inefficient in Europe.
Corruption is rampant. Italy is one of the most corrupt country in Europe.
But, leaving the macro cosmos of the things aside, on the micro cosmos things arent so great either.

Come to Italy and visit it. See how it once was, and what our ancestors did. But stop there. Dont go any further. You wont find anything else worth seeing.

The fact is that I don't even like hot weathers. Alpine temperature was perfect for me, not too hot, not too cold. I exactly don't know what is wrong with my metabolism but I suffer and swears when temperatures are above the 29°, so in a place where summer is so hot that it is around 40° I suffer a lot
my ancestors are mostly French( Normandy and eastern France) and German (Swabia, ducky of Bavaria) and they came in Italy only during low middle ages, XVII century and XVIII century
I identify more with my Norman and Swabian ancestors also because they were Knights who distinguish themselves in battle + I look like them (I'm tall 1,83, green eyes, light skin and reddish beard).
So why should I care about some random peasants of Mediterranean origins when I descend by Germanic and norman knight and I also have their apparence? Put yourself in my shoes and maybe you cloud understand. So why care about DNA of some guy you didn't even know when you know your ancestors and you also look like them?

Most of italy's problems circle back to the fact that they are the oldest in all of Europe.
Other than that, Italy has a culture of complacency and mass tax evasion while the 'ndranghetta skims off the top of the pushovers who just don't want to be bothered. Plus falling behind in the zero sum game of global relevance to Asian countries, but that's not even that big of a deal.
Milan and Turin are still some of the best cities in the world. Rome is not anywhere near as bad as malcontent meds say it is, and once the south gets better internet access, i guarantee you that it's gonna see a very serious revival of its own--or at least plug the hemorrhaging population of young people.

Spain was literally wastelands until Italy brought troops in order to help Franco maintain the regime he cowardly avoided to put at stake during the WW II. Spain was one of the few "relevant" (if we want to be generous) states who was not directly intrested in the conflict that prefeared a bloody civil war in spect of the war ravaging europe, and after the 50s it was so irrelevant they actually needed funds from every other country to build up schools in major cities (a process mostly finished in our days, luckly for them)
Now they feel mighty because, towards doping and silly rule-sliding in sports and theu investments of unclean nature their GdP is superior to italian one, but he forgot to add they are still in the same conditions Italy was in '70 for what concernes pubkic healthcare, schooling system (lowest level of english speakers in the EU), hygiene, and if you are unlucky enough to visit Spain out from the major city your life is still endangered.
The truth is that filthy rich people in Spain earns more than filthy rich in other countriez. Wow. That's an achievement.

The EU was always founded on the false assumption that every country in Europe is similar simply on the basis of being on the same continent and being largely white in character(even though some nations in the Caucasus mountains and central Asia like Tajikstan have very European looking people but in culture very different from the European ideal) The Greeks or the Portuguese were never going to have much in common with the Swedes or Finns to form a common union, their values are different enough that they often fail to agree on key things like how much are people taxed? how long are the kids summer holidays? or is it acceptable to party in the streets at 2am? Southern Europeans have for long been keen to stay in the EU, they always want to be associated with the prosperity and high culture of central Europe, not the corruption and medieval culture that plagues Africa and the middle east.
Northern and central Europeans on the other hand have always been more Eurosceptic whatever the surveys say about Italians wanting to leave the EU(most of the time they don’t) as they have always felt quite wisely that there is no common European culture as seen by how differently Mediterranean peoples act from their own and how different their values often are.
