It's designed to work under a debt based economy. You're expected to take out a loan (go into to debt) so you you can get a new car with all the new bells and whistles.

Yearly changeovers rarely change anything major and mainly seek to keep up with regulations and technology. It's not expensive. Cars only get redesigns twice a decade. There's always demand for new cars as old cars die and new drivers come of age.
The industry works literally the same in every other country and every foreign auto company.

Major changes do come every 5 years. Yearly models barely change anything aside from software and a few parts that they outsource to suppliers anyway. The actual assembly line remains the same.

Musk can probably shuttle money around (see what I did?) from his space company to keep it afloat long enough for the economics to balance out and become economical. I'm just saying they're super nice vehicles and I like 'em.

I don't think their debt is really any different than any other companies debt. Everyone is highly levered right now. That said, I do think they're setting themselves up for another failure by consolidating their different models and getting rid of small cars. Their focus is all on trucks right now. Just like 2006. As soon as we see the market turn back to cars we will have another crisis on our hands. GM and Ford are far too slow to react to changes in consumer demands.

Spend some time maintaining- REALLY maintaining, like, replacing an engine- On a normal POS car and you won't think electric is a soul-less fag-mobile. Ever try getting transmission fluid out of your hair? Do you know how much of that shit is IN a transmission?
