How can there be 10 deaths and 5000 new cases?

Cases literally don't matter. Look at Sweden's cases and deaths. 80% of those are asymptomatic since it's in the younger population.

It's almost as if number of cases has more to do with testing than actual spread of the disease.

The reality is that the disease has 0.1% or less kill rate. When in march 340 people died that meant 500k people or more had it e.g. 10% of everyone.

It's endemic so everyone will have it multiple times during their lives and there's not much anyone can do to stop that, it's no problem though since it's basically harmless. Just like the flu

Denmark isn't on that strict of a lockdown though. Probably same level as the US. Only restrictions are mask wearing in public transport and then the night life shuts down at 10 PM. 1) In the first wave, the testing capacity was overloaded and just a reduced number of people were tested
2) People at risk are more aware and better protected. The one not giving a fuck died in the first wave
3) Better hospital treatment
4) Virus tend to be more contagious but less dangerous over time
5) Better social practice (mask and safety distance). Consequently, the initial viral load might be lower. This results still in an infection, but less sever (this is an hypothesis not attested by scientific literature)

The true is probably a combination of different factors.
But this is a very interesting question.

That's a possibility. But, looking at those numbers, most places would need to be 10x the cases to equal the deaths back then.
