It's a bad idea for a lot of reasons. Aside from the ramifications of WHERE that 'warning' bullet goes, it announces your presence (if there are other BGs there that aren't aware of you), that you have a weapon, and invites return fire. Also, discharging a weapon needlessly is a crime in city areas.
A warning shot gambles an awful lot in order to take the chance that your assailant will flee/surrender when they hear it. Kinda like the whole 'dramatically pumping the shotgun' meme.. Even in ideal circumstances, it's a bad gamble.

this guy doesn't understand gun laws at all. warning shots in a residential area are extremely illegal. "shooting to wound" is also extremely illegal. If you're not shooting to kill, you're not in danger of your life, and you should not be shooting at all.
you also can't brandish a gun at someone just for being in your driveway. guns are for self-defense in a life-threatening situation and nothing else. if you want someone off your property and they won't go, call the cops.
