Towns are divided into zones. The zones along freeways and highways are usually zoned for commercial purposes, hence fast food and convenience stores. Side roads branching off will lead to either industrial, residential, or agricultural zones.

Depends where you are in the states, user. I would not call that semi-rural. Looks like suburbs and disgusting endless commercial zoning. Some towns have finally figured this out and began to better preserved the character of their area. Most have not. In New England, everything is old (relatively), with more small locally-governed towns with their own identities. So things are less shitty here with respect to the pic OP posted. Despite the cities being fully prized, most of new england is very comfy.

user, you have to realize that most of these copy+paste areas were uninhabited wasteland only a century ago. It's not like Europe where the land was completely saturated a thousand years ago. The copy+paste development is the most efficient way to go about it. They're literally building highways and raising towns and commercial centers out of nothing. Much of the western territory is still wasteland as well, I've traveled it. That's why they stuck the Indian reservations out there.
