What's a vat tax?

Financial rape.

Its an extra tax levied on the sale of goods or services. So for example if I sell you a hamburger for 1$ and there is a VAT of 5% your hamburger will be 1.05$

I personally believe it is somewhat a load of bullshit simply due to the fact the tax is just not needed.

You got a problem with how I operate, sir?

the US still has it, but it's just done state by state instead and not included in the listed prices(which is annoying as fuck)

Taxed when I earn it, taxed again when I spend it.

It's fucking stupid. Farmer grows wheat. VAT. Trucker trucks wheat to the mill. VAT. Mill grinds wheat and packages the flour. VAT flour, VAT packaging. Trucker ships packaged flour to warehouse. VAT. Warehouse distributes packaged flour to customers. VAT.
Along the way the exact same thing happens with the diesel fuel for the truck and every component of the truck.
Shop owner pays VAT upon VAT for raw materials like yeast, sugar, oil, salt and packaging before even baking a loaf of bread.
VAT is a fucking scam.

I wouldn't mind one on its own, but coupled with an income tax it's just financial rape. I'm a "taxation is theft guy" so the double dip really does my fucking head in.

It disincentivizes adding value to things.
So that sounds bad doesn't it?

I thought raw materials were VAT-exempt

You're thinking sales tax. I don't think any US state has a VAT tax.

Canada does not have a VAT

America won't be able to function with another tax, we already got state tax, and country tax on goods. so same shit

bullshit.

It fucking sucks. Sometimes, the processing fees are more than the value of the item shipped.

Based america

The former is the problem.

Pretty sure Yang only advocates for VAT with the coming AI and automation apocalypse on the horizon but I could be wrong.

A clutch for goberment that have high taxe evasion such mine.
Should not exist

>were VAT-exempt
until they aren't.
Like masks were voluntary until they weren't.

It's an easy excuse. It's a trial balloon, user. Don't fall for it. The way to fix the system is to stop spending other peoples' money.

It's oppressive to poor and middle class people.

Isnt this a sales tax then?

But if I can't spend other peoples' money I'd have to make my own. That's not fair.

You already have sales taxes instead of VAT, countries with VAT usually don't have a sales tax.

The problem with VAT is that the government eventually applies it to everything...even to bank account interest, hospital and phone bills. I went in for eye surgery this year and they charged 17% VAT for the hospital stay. My internet gets hit with 17% VAT. Digital video game purchases now have 17% VAT. Netflix now has 17% VAT. It also makes mid to high end items much more difficult to acquire. Couple VAT with import tariffs and you will have a difficult time affording electronics or anything modern. $670 dollars for a Playstation 5 or Xbox Series X. $410 for the Series S.
Everything increases in price by 17%. I personally think Mexico is scheming to add VAT to food...the only fucking thing not hit by it.

VAT is actually one of the most regressive taxes out there. It requires funding several social safety nets for it to be a progressive tax, and this is almost never the case.

Taxes are already bad. BUT VAT is a huge scam.

I thought some places like NY already had VAT?

VAT is substantially higher since its applied at every level of the supply chain. Sales tax is only tax... during a sale.

>which is annoying

Sorry, I live in New Hampshire, without a sales tax, wouldn't know about that silly bullshit.

>What are your thoughts on the VAT tax?

CitizenA:
I have this thing I want to sell
CitizenB:
I have money and want that thig
Goverment:
I do not contribute to this in any way, but because you came to agreement I want money

It's Taxation is Theft meme but unironically

Ever try getting an American politician to repeal a tax? Good luck with that.

VAT in the US would turn minecraft into real life.

Its similar and for most people might as well be the same. How VAT and sales taxes work differ for each country.

>Ever try getting a politician to repeal a tax? Good luck with that.

>not included in the listed prices(which is annoying as fuck)
Why, it sucks seeing just how much the tax is or you can't do simple math and figure it out?

In a lot of countries companies can deduct VAT on purchases from their taxes based on their own sales that qualified for VAT.

It's not that simple.

Of course. I hate the RAS Syndrome.

thats why there are so many arrows
usually all of the tax is transferred to the final consumer that way

THERE SHALL BE ONLY ONE TAX

>implying the good states in the USA have sales tax
i wouldn't expect an irish person to know this feeling though

So literally just sales tax?

We pay over 30% depending on the product.

I fail to see the "value" created by value added tax
