Legality and cultural acceptance are two separate things.
When workplaces were smaller and male dominated, there were occasions when men would "take it outside" and management could look the other way. Still happens rarely in the trades.
Hitting the boss probably stays taboo because everybody would hit the boss at some point if they could--dueling/fights are typically intra-peer. Proper leadership requires not punching down at your guys too much, and not getting so chummy that you're having peer type competition.
