This is far more alarming than you think it is. In the 1940's, this very high level was in great parts because women (50% of population) almost never left home until they found a man. Nowadays, this isn't how it works. So we are probably looking at DOUBLE the at-home population, and it's not because of some choice.

this is the result of debt in the housing market...remember the financial crisis of 2008 was cause by mortgages...who who have guessed that leverage/usury is a bad thing

They destroyed the multigenerational household and with it all the values and virtues of caring for the young and old and being positioned to take over the home as newly married couples or staying with the parents until getting a home was a realistic goal. The society we live in today is a direct result in this breakdown of our society that existed this way for our entire civilized history.
