I played some mushihimesama and dodonpachi resurrection tonight. I think I prefer mushihimesama. The colors of bullets in dodonpachi are harder for me to see and the slow-down and recovery feels less smooth, so there were times i ended up hitting bullets because i hadn't shifted direction soon enough.
Gradius V and ZeroRanger have ruined the genre for me, I cant find anything I enjoy remotely as much so I never get to into them anymore
Shmup's are cool. Hard to fuck em up, too, I think.
>tfw the sale will end before I get paid
>user still desperately trying to have a shmup thread on Zig Forums
It won't work
Playing Savant and like it a lot
Is Silpheed on PS2 any good? Speaking of are there any good PS2 shmups that aren't just arcade ports?
Thunder Force IV is kino. Thunder Force AC is also getting a Sega Ages release.
What are some good steam shmups then that aren't CAVEshits?
Hellsinker
Tale of Alltynex
Terra Infiirma is free and is touhou but good
Could never into them but there's a few Raidens on there
Pink Sweets and Muchi Muchi Pork are both great, why do they get hate again? Is it because of the bullshit Cave was pulling with Xbox360 ports?
crimzon clover
luftrausers is pretty cool and I think I remember it being made by an user, though it's more of a twin stick than a traditional shmup
>Pink Sweets
From what I heard it had some terrible bug that made it unplayable
>Muchi Muchi Pork
People hate this? It's fun and has THICC ASS women, it's the greatest piece of art mankind produced only half joking
I've played and 1cc'd all of alltynex and I'm currently doing hellsinker. Is there any that isn't a bullet hell?
PSA for the unaware
Devil Engine, while a good game, is unfortunately a case where Dangen fucked over the developer, so your money isn't going to where it should be.
considering where a certain Mushihimesame Futari patch still stands, yes, I'm still mad
Dariusburst might be what you're after. The other Darius games I've played seemed more focused on positioning than bullet spam
How about verts? I'm pretty horseshit at horis
From my scrolling through steam it seems the verts are all bullet hells, which kind of sucks
Air Gallet isn't on steam but it kicks ass and isn't a bullet hell
Not doing much tonight, but I am going through some vintage classics just for the ride. Here's my shit records so far:
Asteroids
14590
Defender
4200
Galaxian
8870
Space Invaders
3380
Space Invaders Part II
3600
Honestly Space Invaders is the most fun of them so far. It looks like a dinosaur in terms of visuals, but the hitboxes are nice and clean, and you start to realize there's some genuine depth in it which makes it feel very ahead of its time.
cave owns, bitch
I still don't get this meme
What are some good shmups I can play for free?
Why is it that this entire subgenre has either AI that randomly kills itself or completely fucking cheats?
Are any of the shmups the characters from %100 OJ are from any good?
Terra Infirma is free on steam
Otherwise you can search for shmupg in the vg archive and get their mega, and also emulate a ton
Alright I can never get a straight answer for this. What is the ideal version of Triggerheart Exelica? The only consistent answer I get is the XBLA version is apparently terrible
That's just how programming AI goes.
Link? Nothing comes up when I search it on steam.
Whoops, it's called Terra Feminarum
Everyone always forgets about DemonStar, really cool western shmup.
Secret Missions 1 > 2 > Demonstar
Anyone played Jamestown after that DLC update it got not long ago?
There's regular touhou threads, in fact one up right now, so why do general shmup threads always die?
because there is nothing to talk about, meanwhile, the other has a side-game and two monthly manga coming
Holy shit is it normal for R Type Delta to kick my ass so hard?
Kinda what said, there are shmup fans on Zig Forums, but not much to rally around since we are usually playing different games. The threads are still appreciated though
Because wanting to be around and do 'things' to cute girls is a self perpetuating subject. It's not that Touhou fans have more to talk about in their threads, rather, they don't NEED to talk about anything else than how cute *facy-hat loli* is.
Compare this eternal subject to non-aerodynamic space ships.
Diadra Empty
Suguri
Sora
here again.
To add to this, do remember that much of the content that popularized Touhou is fan-made. Touhou is one of thosr special groups that can talk about fanfiction redily on Zig Forums without getting shouted down for it.
Dodonpachi has some pretty fucked lore if you look into it
I only like playing shmups in arcades
At least we have the best gothic lolis ever put in a game
It's hard to find sources on it, but you're definitely right from what I remember about SDOJ
Is Psyvariar Delta any good?
R-Type Final is one of my favourite games of all time, though I don't have much other experience in the genre.
Is there anything similar on PS2 with a plethora of controllable ships?
post webms
How the hell do I beat starbreaker
I never finished Jamestown because I hated the lasy level where you had to navigate an autoscroller labyrynth that tried to crush you. It crushed me and then I respawned inside a wall and got a game over so I ragequit.
City Connection has three more games coming out to Steam.
store.steampowered.com
>a legendary shmup influential to the best makers of the genre
Is that true? It's what steam said
if this could manage to get ported from the 3DS why the fuck can't Kokuga?
It's PR talk but it does have a sizeable cult following since the game is House of Leaves in shmup form. It has a handful of doujinshi music albums/remixes and even got an event for its 10th anniversary.
I think Maniyugi is a weird case, it's clearly had a troubled development history. The devs went silent for a year, quietly released an English translation, and then disappeared. The 3DS version doesn't even exist (yet?) to my knowledge. They sent out Kickstarter rewards and seemed to have called it quits.
Bike Banditz is a pretty fun game if you're looking for something new to play that won't crush your balls.
it's a bit of a weird shmup but this is my favourite
Man do I miss Treasure...
do you actually have to avoid the laser or is it just part of the setpiece?
You have to avoid it obviously. The enemies on screen also get blown up by it.
Anyone play Esp.Ra.De? How are you liking it, how do you find the difficulty?
which has one? What weapons do you use?
The wiki has the tldr, but you need to
-watch for invisible mines, or better, destroy them with area attacks
-evade the flames at all costs, duh
-use lasers and penetrating weapons to deal with flames
considering the above, just charging in with melee weapons is suicidal most of the time
what a shame, other than hellsinker, CCWI boost mode and zeroranger, I can't seem to get my fix
Definitely get shmupmame and their shmup pack
>finnish-based bullet hell shooter
This looks real interesting
Arcades are an urban legend
Just finished Terra Feminarum on novice difficulty. Can easily recommend it. Especially for free game it's very good
Try Steel Vampire. It advertises itself as trying something different, going for lots of enemies rather lots of bullets.
steamcommunity.com
And actually making the game free was quite classy move too.
they had a scoring challenge recently to get your name in the credits, I imagine not many people joined in because the playerbase is small
For 2$ well worth the price
What games similar to those in there?
I need to replay it, the Aurora Edition is an overhaul of the game before they move on to their next project. Speaking of new editions, where the FUCK is Blue Revolver Double Action
Air Gallet, Raiden, most Toaplan stuff
Cool I'll check em out
I've been curious about this for a while, but I've never been able to get someone's opinion on it in Touhou threads. Now that it's free, I might actually play it.
>article says Philosoma is barely worth playing
>it's actually pure kino
Nah I was in one last month
Anyone played Image Fight? Any good?
You will read this.
You will play Treasure's shmups.
I played a bit of Radiant Silvergun but I feel like I'd need another lifetime to route the game.
Who did yokai genocide better Reimu or this foxy girl?
store.steampowered.com
is this any good
>ugly girl boss
>unless you increase the difficulty to hard or up
What happened to Darius Gaiden autist? He's a comfy dude
I started Radiant Silvergun but the only way I'm finishing that is by credit feeding
Hellsinker was THE game that got me into shmups when I found it on some alphabetical shmup blog years ago. I'm so happy it got a Stream re-release with a fresh coat of paint, it really deserved one.
any shmups?
store.steampowered.com
Great soundtrack
Looks like a clusterfuck, picked up
About 50 shmup cabs, almost every good shmup was in there.
The ALLTYNEX trilogy is supposed to have an English devbook on the Steam page but the publisher is a fucking retard (and possibly not even active anymore) so you have to buy it from a third-party site. I uploaded it here.
mega.nz
Sweet mother of BASED
Anyone got a mega for the steam Alltynex games? If the publisher is defunct I don't want to give my money to no one
SITER SKAIN is still alive, working on some mech game. The publisher is alive since they responded and told me where to buy the book, they're just fucking doing anything lately for whatever reason.
Wait Nyu media is dead?
Inactive at least. You can email them and ask what they're up to if you want.
>thought I was sending an email to SITER SKAIN from their bandcamp
>it redirects to Nyu Media
should've just asked on twitter. Nyu's email is [email protected]
Touhou is the Pokemon of Shmups. Never ending amount of content be it main games, fan games, books, manga, fan music renditions, doujinshi(both h and non-h), fanart, etc.
Ah so that's the name of the girl and the furry
is there a decent curator or something I can follow for Steam shmup reviews and new shmup releases, SHMUP Life might as well be dead.
store.steampowered.com
Anyone play this?
awesome ty
I've seen a couple of gameplay footage
it looks cool but I heard it's janky
Ikaruga
弾幕アマノジャク 〜 Impossible Spell Card
Psyvariar Delta
ESCHATOS
What the best projectile in shmups and why is it homing lasers
What's the term for more cinematic shmups like Treasure ones, Philosoma, R Type Delta, Darius Gaiden etc? Ones that are different to the arcades
>captcha thinks I'm a bot
I'm not giving you money for a pass gookmoot
>State successfully loaded
great thing takes a lot of practice, okay?
>are the orange_juice shmups good
Yes they're pretty fun.
You can find qps and the xms level addon pretty easily but no translation exists
Suguri and sora play way different from a traditional bullet hell but are good fun. Aosx and aos2 let you play that as a vs game
Qpsd and xmss are iterations on qps and xms and are decently challenging at high difficulties but really approachable as a new player
Flying red barrel is fun rocket spamming game with branching story paths but good luck getting it since the publisher is dead in the dirt, piracy is literally the only way to play it, or in the original japanese.
cheater
Woah, I did not expect this
100% based
I'm developing a schmup right now despite not even neing able to 1cc any touhou on normal.
Did someone say Darius?
Got any footage?
Isn't that a DoA character? What's she got to do with anything
website just ate my image, thanks moot
How are you supposed to destroy the midboss orb without destroying them? They fly away before I can do it
I'm working on a vs STG game and am trying to iron out a bunch of bullshit kinks in my design before I commit them to code. What are some pitfalls I should be avoiding?
Bullet density is somewhere between gradius and fantasy zone. I dont want to try to balance any bullet curtains since I know I'll fuck it up
I like laser duels, personally. Border Down for example.
You mean the little orb some of those enemies have on their head that let you capture it?
Your best bet is either controlling your laser power so you have those little white bullets(the one you start the game with), those things are more powerful than any other beam upgrades. If you have those you have to focus on hitting the orb with your white bullets, but you have to be really spot on or you'll kill the fish before you get the orb.
Your other bet is just shotgunning it with your torpedoes, and it either has a really tight window or requires luck and good reflexes considering how random some of those midboss fucks like to be by the end
taito a cute
>final boss of ALLTYNEX Second finally explained
About time I've always wondered what that was all about
I had to go find a synopsis on some JP wiki. I haven't read this book yet but if I recall ALLTYNEX merges with computers in other dimensions or something crazy. The plot is nuts.
Can I talk about Shock Troopers here? Because holy shit Shock Troopers is good. I'm not sure if it counts as a shmup but it's not really a run'n'gun either. The only real issue is that the screen scrolling is controlled by the player's movement rather than being automatic.
Either way if your 3-person team doesn't have Big Mama on it you're not doing it right.
R-Type I and II are there as R-Type Dimensions EX. Also, Strikers 1945 was released yesterday, with reaction time superior to the Switch release (less frames).
Unless you are doing a very different kind of shmup, that sounds like a bad idea. Shmups are a genre for enthusiasts, and unless you have a good understanding of what makes a pattern fun for these enthusiasts, you're probably just going to make a mediocre game.
Still, as long as you consider making the game a learning experience, it's not a bad idea. Also, I think people here (and in Touhou threads) would be happy to give you feedback once you have something playable, and that may be a way to make up for your own lack of experience.
>just going to make a mediocre game
Never stopped Toaplan or Psikyo
>kamui was only a kid when she woke up and was forced to murder everyone and then her father
Honestly, it shouldn't stop anyone. It's better to try and be mediocre than to never try at all.
As long as its free and not too long, I'd happily play any game developed by another user.
I'm honestly not sure which is more messed up, Kamui or RefleX story. The final sequence in the latter always makes me shiver.
Is this _fun_?
>strikers 1945 is on steam
what the fuck
fucking captcha
Is the secret ending intact?
I second R-type final, tons of ships and route to try.
I'll tell you once I stop getting hit by lightning fast bullets
>your image contains an embedded file
Have to skip a page, just download the book
>everybody loves scorpio
Well, theyre not wrong
yes
What's the story order?
>Alltynex Second
>Kamui
>Reflex
?
its Altyness > RefleX > Kamui
captcha has turned into a fucking jew, here's the remaining 4 pages
imgur.com
Thanks a bunch
thanks user, I thought I would never find a version of this guide book online
What's the difference between the steam Alltynex and the nicoblog one?
Already gonna buy ZerOranger and Astebreed, looking around for more to buy on steam right now. Might finally bite the bullet and try to get into CAVE, should I start with Dodonpachi or Mushihimesama?
>nicoblog one
No idea, never tried it. Link it.
Working on a 1CC right now on Devil Engine, my first shump that I haven't dropped. Any recommendations for other ones to try? I tried Touhou Embodiement of Scarlet Devil and just got really bored, I think I preferred my brief play of Raiden IV over it. Maybe Perfect Cherry Blossom is a better representation of Touhou? So far Thunderforce IV, R-Type and Zeroranger are catching my attention the most
IN is the most complete Touhou game and a better representation than PCB
I remember someone said something similar to you and he ended liking Subterranean Animism more, so you could try that
IN is my favorite though
OH that Nitroblog. They just rehost shit, it's most likely the same as the Steam version.
aaaaaAAAAAAAAAA
Someone in a previous thread mentioned a game that was supposed to be a shmup/racing hybrid, I can't remember the name.
What is this?
Darius Gaiden I believe is the webm game
>not recognizing Darius
>with a sea creature boss in the webm
for shame
There's also this, if the game is a shmup with a robot fish then it's Darius
Kingdom Grand Prix
Oh yeah I should add thats the racing shmup one lol
You're making me want to pick Cho Ren Sha back up, even if I was never good at it.
I love shmups but my brain just fails whenever too much shit is on the screen
>5 slow bullets appear
>panic and crash
You should! Its an amazing game.
Whats the farthest you've gotten?
>beat boss
>crash into ceiling during stage transition or waste a bomb
>that scene transition into second loop
what other shmups take the looping mechanic into its narrative?
Thank you.
As soon as I saw the answer I thought "Yeah, probably shoud've been able to tell, what with the giant fish"
I believe I hit Stage 3, but I have horrible restart syndrome, and I tended to stop a run if I messed up too quickly.
the CRS68k musician has a bandcamp by the way (at least I think it's him), you can buy the album and his other music I guess, haven't listened to them. which other shmup musicians have a bandcamp for me to follow?
loserkashiwagi.bandcamp.com
er, rather
>Kingdom Grand Prix
>Raizing racing shmup
I never played this, how is it? I'm a bit intrigued.
Has anyone here played this? I can't get past the final boss in true mode...
The hellsinker guy still makes tracks on soundcloud
soundcloud.com
I haven't played it, but I've had my eyes on it. Would you recommend it?
>the soundtrack is more expensive than the game itself
what the fuck are they thinking. that being said I'm looking forward to Moon Remix RPG or whatever it's called.
Yeah thats a bad habit to have, I say its not even that necessary in CRS68K. You dont need a lot of resources to finish the first loop, you only end up needing a lot of lives if you want to tackle the second loop.
You can still reliably beat most of the stages with your unupgraded weapon, so dying doesnt set you back(that much)
So THAT'S where he is.
It's very short but it's very good, it focuses more on getting a higher score in each session than on one successful playthrough.
is that an actual thing? i reflexively restart when I get hit during a section I "shouldn't" because I normally don't. just try to grind out that section more if I'm dying there
Damn, it's pretty expensive. Well, it's not like I have a shortage of games to play, so I can wait.
The Sega CD version is better
H E L L S I N K E R
Is Ghost Blade any good?
I like Ketsui very much and want to talk about it
Never got the hype for this one
Play Bullet Hell Monday, whether it be Original, Black or Finale.
Does anyone still like Deathsmiles?
I like Cotton 2 a little more but it's alright
I don't like its art style but I like there's a boss called Tyrannosatan
I would consider it but like hell I'm playing a bullet hell game on mobile. I will consider it if its somehow playable on PC
