ATB Combat

Do you play in wait or active mode?

wait because I'm old

I play in better games that dont use this shitty system mode.

Active
God I miss turn based combat

wait because quickly browsing menus isn't my idea of fun or strategy

Wait run like shit, you cannot even sort your characters while on wait, Active is the only way to play.

Active with max speed. It can be really challenging at times.

Name one jrpg that actually takes strategy instead of all the enemies having obvious elemental weaknesses or just dying in 1/2 attacks.

dragon quest 11.
next.

Recently played OG FF7, fucking active is a pain in the ass. Tarting in that game is absolutely shit, I can't tell you how many times I accidentally attacked my allies, myself, or healed an enemy because I was trying to target quickly and it doesn't cycle intuitively. Absolutely turned on wait.

>playing on 3x speed active.
>actually almost die to random encounter
This made FVII more interesting.

Nigger this year has P5 and Poor's man Final fantasy (Bravery Default), last year was DQXI, atelier Ryza and others, every goddamn year we have a Pokemon game, if something turn based needs to die.

exactly. feels like the only 3d game that is designed for active is ff9 with its menu based targeting + overall slower atb build up

bullshit

Smt 3 Nocturne.
that is what makes it fun though.

Wait because i'm used to games like SMT

Nigger all of those games with the exception of DQ are fucking weeb cringe garbage. Only Bravely is passable.

wait in FF.

active in chrono trigger so team mates can catch up for team attacks

>clunky menus = fun

this is your brain in jrpgs

>constantly mis-targeting enemies because of clunky shit controls is "fun"
are you serious?

>that is what makes it fun though.
Unintuitive targeting that makes you attack allies and heal enemies is fun?

I'm playing ff7 and I can't even tell the difference between wait and active so I just have it on active so shit goes faster

wait, active has no point.

"hurry and pick your potions quick!"

I am not saying the retarded way moving the cursor works in FVII is fun. But the cursor is dumb in wait mode as well. While Trying to do things Quickly makes it fun. Like Climbing in Cathrine would not be as fun if you didn't spaghetti sometimes when shits about to fall from under you.

>makes it fun
in ff7, pressing down on the dpad here will target your character, instead of the other monster. thats how fucking bad it is.

I know see
but also

There is absolutely no reason to ever pick active. Jrpgs are not complex enough to require quick thinking, you just keep spamming the most damaging skill and sometimes weakness/healing

>DQ
>Not cringe weeb garbage
Also your point was that there were noy enough games with turn based, even if thee games are shit because turn based games are shit more usually than not I'm proving you wrong, annually we get shitload of turn based games because they are cheap and relatively easy to make and that's where I'm going.

Do not say that we don't get enough turn based.

Depends on the game. Crono Trigger and FFXII are pretty fun in active mode.

Wait makes it so your and your enemies atb bar pauses when you are selecting targets, and spells/items. It doesn't pause on the Attack/Item/Magic/Command select screen, but after you select a command, it will pause.

The main reason i switch to wait was so you could more carefully target who you wanted to, and Tifa's limit break roulette. Otherwise you just keep getting ass blasted while you're trying to find the right target.

im not the user you were talking to, but I share his sentiment. however, the reason im not interested in 90% of the games you listed is because they're all filled with anime cringe weeb shit that's typical of every jrpg post 2000. dragon quest is literally the only exception, so i continue to enjoy that series.
i've played bravely and it was ok, im waiting for 2, but it was just that, ok.

Wait lets you min-max everything more efficiently. Which is the entire goddamn point of building an RPG character for combat in the first place.

in active mode the bar keeps filling even while attack animations play. you're thinking of the "recommended" mode, which indeed pauses the bar when animations play
>that tifa bit
god dont remind me. how the fuck did that even get past QA?

Then the wording is wrong because he should have said that he misses WORTHWHILE turn based, and Dragon Quest's issue isn't on "anime garbage" like you said but is entirely different.

The formula is busted and stale because we get so much crap with the same vein that most of us are already tired of it, and this is from someone who bought DQXI and clocked 110 hours, the game is mediocre and the turn based is stale
