At least it isn't more Peter Jackson wankery
I still think it's too peter jacksony, they just cartoonified it but it's still essentially the same shit. I remember when they said they were doing their own take on Gollum but this is exactly the same for all intents and purposes.
environments look nice but why gollum? He doesn't seem fit for a main protagonist role.
Because people know Gollum and no one has done it yet, so they can claim originality.
Do you think Smeagol instantly transmogrified into the emaciated, hairless Gollum? It took ages.
Because he's popular and there's a lot of gaps in his backstory to fit a game in.
Humans are boring as fuck.
Man this new TLOU2 footage looks great.
I think LOTR is just not a good setting for video games honestly, it's boring and limited just like star wars. It worked well for the story it wanted to tell but doing anything else with it just feels forced and unnecessary. Star Wars is the same way, they have never successfully been able to get away from the same tropes and aesthetics ad nauseam for decades. Even better shit like Kotor still suffered from essentially the same tropes and cliche's remixed slightly. LOTR is even worse in this respect.
>Non anglos having anything to do with lotr
Tolkien would be sick
>but why gollum?
WB wants to milk the license as much as possible, so they get devs to make a game then paint it LOTR in whatever way possible.
Peter Jackson has probably the best presentation of the world
wtf is this garbage?
Gollum stealth/adventure game in the works by some studio I can't remember the name of.
Wow...so this...is the power...of Xbox...Series...X...we won Xbros...
I don't know why people fuck with consoles anymore.
True, he was racist after all.
fuck you lol
they probably got pressured to stay close to the jackson gollum design because it's too iconic / ingrained in pop culture
the lack of graphical fidelity and stylized rendering leads me to believe the intent is to port this thing to PC/Switch eventually. is it supposed to be a locked in never ever exclusive?
This. I remember the thread where someone brought up Tolkien's description to illustrators, where he was described as having pale skin, but usually seen in poor light and obscured by his dark clothes. None of that to be seen here. Heck, both The Hobbit game has a design more unique from Jackson's, and this game came out during the movie hype.

Don't pretend the films are a good portrayal of middle-earth
I don't think WB has anything to do with this game
I know that's probably why, and it's just a shame. I don't think any LOTR property is ever going to escape the shadow cast by the movies, it fucking sucks. That's one reason I really enjoy the old animated films because they were untainted by the Peter Jackson trilogy.
I've never watched a lotr movie or star wars. Am I missing out? Closest thing to any of that was watching The last unicorn when I was 10.
Damn these designs are hella similar, I bet the game took direct inspiration from the animated film.
He was nothing but a scavenger and murderous hermit once the ring claimed him, I don't think you can really make a game centering around him without taking extreme liberties. Then again the Morder games have virtually nothing to do with the canon lore anyway so they probably will make shit up again.
Skip Star Wars, but do check LOTR. One of the most impressive film productions of all time, and good movies as well. If you want more, watch the sequel, King Kong. Those are the only films in the series.
Lotr is a comfy trilogy about people going on an adventure. Totally worth watching the extended edition. The hobbit trilogy is not really good but if you like lotr you'll probably enjoy it anyway for the lore
Never watched star wars either
LOTR trilogy is good, original Star Wars trilogy is good but avoid every other movie.
>I don't think you can really make a game centering around him without taking extreme liberties. Then again the Morder games have virtually nothing to do with the canon lore anyway so they probably will make shit up again
I know I'm in the minority but this is the only way I think LOTR games should be handled, pretty much exclusively what-if scenarios and non-canon shit. The further you try to adhere to canon the more autists are going to cry and throw shit around because games have to inevitably take some liberties so you might as well go crazy with it. Not to mention as my previous post said I just think LOTR is a weak property for video games and expanded material.
this design always kicked ass, love how grubby he looks but not in a demented way like the jackson gollum
Absolute buffoons
As much as I like that version, it's really hard to imagine that thing ever having been hobbit like.
This is a hobbit in the Rankin Bass universe.
No one is claiming the Peter Jackson version (which is clearly inspired by this art) is bad or inaccurate it's just stale. I welcome liberties being taken because I'm simply tired of this design.
