I tried playing through the royal edition hoping they had fixed it but you really can't fix something that is so shitty from the jump. Don't get me wrong i love the bromance between the characters and noctis wasnt too horrible but after that there's nothing there for me. The game is littered with fetch quests and the main story is just as fucking stupid as it ever was. The combat is uninspired as hell and i honestly think if they had made a good turn based combat system it could have served the game better. It really wanted to be a devil may cry but it lacked everything those games had that made combos cool. The dlc tries to flesh things out a little bit but it just left me asking why they could't have been fucked to have this content in at launch. The world is pretty barren and it (unironically) feels soulless and generic. The ending is just generic too and I left feeling like this game woudlve been way better had it came out as versus 13

The royal version honest to god barely adds shit. It is not worth buying as dlc as it shouldve been in the game at launch but there's barely anything there of value in the first place.

The story is a boring cut up mess.
The characters are generic cookie cutters in design and personality.
The world map is empty and beyond boring to explore. The cities are small and extremely dull. The combat is boring and tedious. The music is probably the most forgettable in the series.

Remember when Tabata said there wouldn't be character switching in the game and then after a shitstorm and the character centric episodes, they then allowed you to finally fucking switch characters? Oh, and it's too bad they didn't balance the fucking game with the other character's combat. Also Prompto's combat isn't just the worst, it's fucking shit, end of story, why would you ever bother playing as Prompto outside of his below average DLC? And why would you play as Noctis when both Gladio and Ignis play as actual action combat characters? And Gladio's combat still was never balanced for the base game.
