It doesn't even have to branch into any other genres.
Having some good interactivity for the sex part already would be a huge step up.
Like manual thrusting, dynamic position changing, girls traits actually doing things during H, post sex stuff like cuddling or handholding.
Some of these things were even in old illusion games, but they forgot.

Still wondering what the fuck happened to the old massage minigame.... and why are they still using the telescope dick, manual thrusting is the one thing TK17 still has over illusion, somehow taking the dick and dragging it inside in any animation is an absolutely phenomenal feeling

Not with that garbage base game.
They're doing the right thing by making a completely new game that hopefully performs decently instead of adding stuff on that piece of shit, even the Studio runs bad in AI compared to all the other games' Studio.

Since they are not allowed to show the dick anyway it's a simple cylindrical shape.
Making it telescope is much easier to line up animations for characters of different scale an prevent clipping.

That's not really a good excuse when Miconisomi makes actual penetrations with proper dicks with a fraction of the budget, it has little to do with that.
Actual technical reason behind telescope dicks is that it's a lot easier to handle when you have variable heights in character models as a factor, you just put two coordinates on a simple cilinder and call it a day, now, if you want to do proper penetrations it would be a lot more complicated to handle without incurring into several clipping and warping issues, and Illusion's too lazy and incompetent to care about that when they have to censor their shit by law anyway, it's all about how much care you want to put in the game and Illusion doesn't care much, which is also why AI recycled a shitload of animations from HS compared to the previous games that came out with new and unique animation libraries.

They are lazy and pick the easy way out.

but you cant even have any significant height variance between the characters in any recent illusion games, even if you mod them to be smaller than what the base game allows you to they get fucking STRETCHED as soon as you put them into an animation
Even a decade old hackjob like TK17 has actual penetration that works with user-made poses and much more height variance than illusion games
