After completing FF7:R and FFX in succession I'm well and truly in the mood for more good JRPGs. I've seen this one posted a lot and seeing as how I've never played a DQ game before, I'm considering making the purchase.
In terms of systems I've got a PS4, 3DS and Switch. Which version do you think is best? At the moment I'm leaning more towards PS4 purely because it's on sale but I've got to admit, I do prefer my JRPGs handheld (it makes grinding a lot more manageable).
Also, what kind of class system are we talking here? Predefined roles (FF4,6,9) or a more malleable system? I realise I could research this myself but I'd prefer to hear from people who have played the game and I don't trust review sites really.
dqxi is a 9.5/10 but you will not like it because you won't "get it" and play it with the right mindset. I unironically recomment you watch the next video: youtube.com/watch?v=4iTbUGItU0s I know, kotaku, but it's literally the only good review they made, because Tim Rogers or whatever the fuck his name is genuinely knows his shit about this game, having lived in japan and being a long time fan.

DQ11 was by far the most fun i had with a JRPG on the PS4.
The roles are more or less predefined as it fits the chars.
It s like playing a great classic JRPG without random encounters.
Just finished my second playthrough.
Ryan Reyes
yeah, its such an insanely nice, comfy and fun game if you dont go into it with the faggot "competitive hardcore gaymerrr" mentality. If you want to relax and play a nice story, it's one of the best
Wyatt Sanchez
Thanks bros, looks like it'll be Ps4 then!

DQXI is a great game OP and one of the comfiest JRPGs out. I have a Switch and PS4 Pro and played through it on Pro and loved it. So much content and a very good challenge on harder battles draconian mode. I tried the Switch version demo just to see what it was like and to be honest the graphics downgrade + draw distance really took away from the experience and I didn't really find too much added at least at the start. I'd recommend getting the cheaper PS4 version if bad draw distance kills immersion for you like it does me
As for the rest of what you said the game has pretty pre determined roles however it takes ages to unlock all the skills for each character. What order you choose to unlock abilities definitely makes a big difference in how each character plays+party fight dynamics
Hope you enjoy the game whatever version you decide to go with
sorry forgot to talk about platform bc I didnt read the full op. The definitive version is 100% on the Switch, it has everything the other versions have + extra stuff, so it's no debate. Plus this is the type of game that is really nice to play in bed, cozy under a blanket, but it works on the dock as well

Games very very good, but its my first JRPG (unless you count Panzer Dragoon Saga) so you can't trust that much.
Still, it says something that I spent 80 hours (didn't get all the sidequests but a good amount) on something that would ordinarily make me retch.
What should I follow this up with?
Jace Hall
Played it for a few hours before dropping it. Voice acting is horrible and the combat is the same turned based shit as it was 20 years ago, which admittedly i was never a fan off. It honestly felt like a game still stuck in the early 2000
Nolan Stewart
Dragon quest 11 is my favorite game of the last 10 years. I played it on the switch. Good time
It is when the Switch has bad draw distance and is more than double the price. I get it has extras but it's not like the original version is lacking in content. I put in nearly 200 hours crafting and doing everything before finally beating the final boss in Act 3

DQ thread?
I loved XI so much, I played III and had a blast. I'm about to finish V now (last boss), and I liked it a lot but not as much as the other two.
Which one should I try next? Also, I bought IX really cheap on a second hand shop, is it really not that good if I can't use the multiplayer function?

Go with switch it’s the better version. All versions of the game have pre defined rolls. Switch has orchestral music as well as a ton of quality of life changes and costumes being equip able even if you don’t have the right gear equipped
Jacob Johnson
Final Fantasy X. Similar comfy JRPG with strong character building and story
Henry Diaz
fair enough bro, I was wrong to say it's no debate. I've now realised that it's a preference thing, for me graphical stuff didn't matter for this game in particular and I preferred being able to play in bed and the extra stuff
Brody Stewart
I only played dragon quest 9 single player because nobody would play it with me. Great game
Joseph Nguyen
Play Jade cocoon. I don’t own a PS4 but perhaps it’s available in the online store. If not you can just emulate it on your phone
Grayson Kelly
Either 8 or 4
Levi Watson
Do yourself a favor and play DQ3 instead
Liam Davis
It's very, very, very generic. If you like that though, go for it, I enjoy it.
Nicholas Robinson
I have the Switch version, which is nice. But honestly, you're not missing much by playing the PS4 if it is cheaper. The game is a bit easy for the most part, so maybe turn on some Draconian Quest stuff.
Jason Martinez
got the switch version instead of the pc one, hope i made the right choice. i just prefer playing jrpgs on a console though, comfier that way.
i'm so glad Tim Rogers left Kotaku, he deserves better
Camden Kelly
Cool, thanks
Christian Peterson
In a world where everything is crazy generic is nice
Brody Powell
it's a stupidly long game
Connor Perry
"right mindset" The only fucking mindset you need going into DQ is to not listening to all of the retards online that think every game should be as crazy as a Yoko Taro/Nomura game
Connor Torres
Good mechanics, but very repetitive because the protagonists are forced to be idiots that they will play the same narrative 5 times
Luke Kelly
I'll check it out. Haven't hooked up my PS2 in awhile. Looks like it was given a remaster unfortunately, what a shame.
Hunter Taylor
Switch. I played original release on PC and Switch version is the definitive experience. More quests, more cut scenes, more story, and the option to marry the best girl. It's a 100+ hour great RPG but because it's so long, you are not likely to replay it more than once. So you will want to get the most out of it and do the most with the content and Switch has that. You will miss the nice graphics though, but since you didn't say PC, it probably doesn't matter to you.
Ever since I got the game a few months ago I kept putting off continuing it, which is strange since I genuinely love the game. Good characters, scenarios, settings, it’s true when people say it’s simple but effective just from the sheer amount of stuff going on. But now that I’m in the post game I feel like complaining about how all the moments during act 2 are kind of snubbed out since it feels so rushed, like everyone except the luminary just stands around and does what they did again with less impact, Like how Erik reunited with his sister by just curing her instantly, stuff like that
Cameron Reed
Playing through XI now. Just got to the point where long-haired fuccboi meets you at the heart and wrecks your shit. Doing the solo mission stuff now. What's the best way to build Sylvando? I don't really understand how Charm/Deftness work either, or what stats to after in that regard when building Erik/Jade/Syl. The rest are more obvious.
Julian Robinson
Yea the Final Fantasy X remaster is dogshit definitely play the original PS2 version or emulate on PC. They absolutely wrecked the faces of a bunch of characters and it heavily takes away from some important cut scenes. The lack of emotion conveyed by the awful wooden faces cannot be understated
Daniel Butler
DQXI is as vanilla as it gets, it's a pretty safe purchase.
Juan Wright
Content + QoL > Graphics.
Carson Martin
I hate how Act 3 is too important to be dismissed as post-game so I agree should have had a lot more time sunken into it if it was going to be that vital to the plot. At least the Switch version kinda concludes Jasper/Hendrik's arc in a meaningful way but that came after the game was finished
Daniel Bennett
Everyone feels this way user you're not alone. Act 1 is great, Act 2 is God tier and Act 3 is good for compeltionists but the overall story of the game has arguably a better ending if you take Act 2 finish as canon and leave it there
Sylvando is basically best built as a support. Get him the healing dance (can't remember the proper name) and the ability to remove status ailments and cast oomph. Having him use a whip is nice for extra group damage too but ultimately he's a support character. Also charm increases the effects of all abilities (including his heal dance) and deftness increases chance to steal items so basically only useful for Erik
