No it wasn't. It was pitifully short and can be beaten in the span of an afternoon. Its gameplay is repetitive only giving you glimpses of what could be for a handful of battles. Most of the time you're the red heart when there are very clearly other hearts with different styles of attacking/defending that would make enemies infinitely more interesting to fight against and keep the gameplay varied. It would also allow improved boss fights. What if instead of the boss introducing the new heart and then dropping it immediately after, the new heart gets introduced in the area leading up to that boss and the boss is a test of your skills with the new mode? That would mean the bosses can get more difficult because of your pre-established familiarity with the gameplay. It's also very clearly written like an Earthbound clone with internet humor in it and it's just complete dog shit. The power of friendship moral at the end is cliché. There's also a distinct lack of self awareness. Specifically with the character Toriel. She serves as a mockery of overtutorialization in modern games. A funny concept on paper until you realize that because of her, the start of the game is overtutorialized. Ironic overtutorialization is still overtutorialization. The only thing I can really praise about Undertale is its music. Fox is a composer, not a writer, game designer, or whatever the fuck else. Notice how most of his jobs post undertale were strictly composing.
