The friends were never the problem, the problem was when they forced bad gameplay styles no one wanted onto them. If the friends had a similar gameplay style to Sonic, or at least had good gameplay, they wouldn't have gotten the bad reputation.
Of course Sega should have understood that this was the real criticism behind "too many friends", but obviously they are too stupid to understand even that and ended up taking it completely literally.

Fixed. "Sonic's stupid friends" were usually a response to the significant play-style shifts in Sonic Adventure and to an extent, Heroes. '06 had it even worse.

I never thought they were the problem. In fact, the secondary characters are the only thing I like about Sonic. The problem is and always has been Sonic Team keeping total control of all design decisions. Both gameplay and character designs.
Cream should return in every future Sonic game. As a built in "easy" mode for every game. Keep her overpowered and let beginner players use her to learn the basics. Or people who just want to warp through the levels. Then you play the other characters if you want a challenge/play as the designers intend.
