I would say the nerf was partially justified. Not because the character was good though, he was always bad. Burying in Ultimate was busted at launch and propeller pack was basically just "hold on don't even bother trying to play the game right now" however nerfing its ability to snap to ledge was unnecessary. His neutral special also should have remained unchanged.

The "nerf" to his bury actually ended up being a buff at relevant percentages though. It was worded as being a nerf but in actuality it makes you escape at lower percents but made it harder to escape at mid-high percents. And this affected all buries including the likes of Inkling and GnW. That's why you now see shit like Nairo being unable to mash out of a G&W bury at 70% and dying because of it.

Ultimate has a wide variety of legal stages and still almost all matches are played on either FD or Smashville. It's because they suck and nobody wants to play on them.

It's because pro players don't want to learn how to play on a billion different stages. The vast majority of fighting games don't have this problem.

Nah, he was actually quite a bit worse than he is now. The bury nerf stayed, but having moves like Neutral Air buffed was easily a worthwhile trade-off.
