I’ve never played a Final Fantasy game before. What’s a good game to start with?

6
VI if you want a retro game and the best game in the series. X if you want to start with something more new.
4 for the OG feel then 6 then 7 then 9.
if you need more after this, 10 then 8.
That one.
The one where you eat a bullet. Go play fortnite, where you belong.
5 or 9 probably
I have been wanting to play the classic final fantasy games after I finish 7 as my first one. Are the PSP versions good?
Start with remake of IV (PSP/Vita or DS/3DS), then play After Years (essentially IV-2), then play V on PSOne or it's remake on iOS/Android, then do the official Holy Trinity that is VI-VII-VIII, then do FF Tactics on PSOne (ignore PSP garbage), then FFT Advance and Advance 2 back-to-back on GBA, then move to XII International Zodiac Job System or Steam's HD remaster called Zodiac Age, then World of Final Fantasy (either PC or Switch), then do FF VII remake. That's basically that. Ignore everything else in the franchise.
None. They are all shit. Play Dragon Quest instead. This is the blackpill that normalfags will find hard to swallow.
The best one Mystic Quest
>Pick up ff13 when it came out
>Get to the part where you get branded and are in the crystal area
>Stop playing and never pick it up again
Did I miss out on a great game? I could get it on steam now.
7, 8, 9. They're the best in the series.
4 and 5 if you want a more snes experience.
1 is great but an aquired taste, 2 and 3 are shit, 6 is overrated and a downgrade from 5, 10 is shit, I don't think you can even play 11 anymore, 12 is fine but a much different experience, 13 is steaming shit, 14 is mmo shit, 15 is wasted potential, 7R is great but assumes you played the original and time jannies can be a deal breaker for some.
TL;DR: 7 is probably THE best definitive place to start, 8 or 9 are fine, 8's systems are a bit wonky though.
FF7R
13 is literally the worse game in the series user, don't make the same mistake twice.
Shills still shilling
Dragon Quest is boring dogshit.
>9
>best
Found the shit-eater.
5, 6, 7 or 9
It's a truly terrible game.
anyone else think the characters and interactions with cool intent went away after 13? character wise that's the peak for ff, varying intent between characters, real drama
>IV-V-VI-VII-VIII
Thanks for confirming.
>Skipping 5
No.
IV on PSP is pretty great, although some people will prefer the 3D version on DS/Steam. Personally, PSP is a near ideal way for me to play PS1 games, so it's absolutely a Final Fantasy machine if you want it to be
Here's how I would do it
FF4
FF6
FF7
FF9
FF10
Everything after 10 is pretty much shit but I would say those 5 games are core to the FF series
Is Final Fantasy basically just walking through a bunch of cutscenes and pressing A to win in a battle that pops up every minute? Doesn't seem like much of a "game."
9 and 4 then you can quit
i like 12
i dont know if it's a good one to start with
but i also dont care
play 12
Based
>VIII
5 6 7
Yeah dragon quest always seemed way too bland for me to enjoy fully. Even DQ11 is boring
>GOATs
6, 7, 9, Tactics
>GOOD
4, 10, 12
>DON'T PLAY
Any of the others
VI, but that's the best so maybe IV?
Yes.
X
Unironically Dissidia 012. You get the best bits of FF without the Nomura/2deep4U plot and LOL GOD/PERSON WITH GOD COMPLEX IS THE FINAL BOSS.
it has its moments but oh my god the amount of shit you have to go through to get there is just not worth it.
Agreed, but I'd say FF3 on DS is passable, I don't get why it gets so much hate.
World of Final Fantasy is solid and should be played
I hope OP reads this post, it's basically the only correct one in the thread
start with 7, finish it, then drop the series because it has nothing else to offer you
Are you
>Retro games ftw I love pixels
>Anime weeb extraordinaire
>I dunno man I just want something cool
Describe why you're interested in the series.
Ff4 is a terrible way to start. Its good but its style wouldnt really be fun to beginners. Ff7 original is the most popular for a reason. Play that one. Great story and battles are easy to pick up.
The older games are about exploration and some fights can be really difficult on proper levels. It's a shame that it's really easy to even accidentally over level if you don't actively run from battles.
>Miss a Pokemon
>Have to start save scumming
Now I remember why I hate Pokemon
>Noone talk about Type-0
It was the last FF in PSP
Contrarian opinion here, but 7 Remake. Telling new people to JRPGs to jump into 23 year old visuals and gameplay is a horrible idea. Atleast this way they'll manage to get through the modern visuals/gameplay and perhaps get invested in the story enough to want to check out OG FF7 to see where the story goes. If they manage to actually finish OG 7, maybe they'll appreciate the other top quality old ones like 6/8/10/12.
>Everyone sleeping on V
shame on you all
You sure?
Nigga 7 Remake just assumed you've already played 7
I was thinking about this the other day but in the majority of Final Fantasies, the first four characters you get are usually the best and the rest are usually unnecessary. I think 13 and maybe 12 are the only exceptions
fuck off, Cecil.
>Haremshit
no thank, bro
Whatever number my post ends with is the one you have to play, 0 is Tactics.
But in 7 the last character you get is the best one
>Cecil
lol how ironic
X is very easy to get into, its visuals still hold up very well and its soundtrack is amazing
there are plenty of wacky and cool moments so its overall enjoyable
It's a fun game if you're the kind of person who gets into a flow and doesn't mind levels that are several hours long. You also have to have some amount of tolerance for anime bullshit and for not necessarily having a sandbox to play around with (vs a slow build in game mechanics).
If you're cool with all of that, XIII is visually gorgeous with varied, colorful, and imaginative art design that still holds up; has the best soundtrack in the entire series; and has a battle system that balances depth and twitch viscerality.
I liked it but if you go into it with any expectations you might have a bad time.
This. V's the best mainline game.
The last digit is the Final Fantasy you should play.
>Cecil
its V, not IV, you imbecile
You can play remake fine before 7. You won't catch what some of the flashfoward/flashback scenes mean but it's still a straight forward story. That's why I said they'll maybe want to pick up OG 7 after to catch the things that don't make sense.
As someone who thinks Remake is better than OG FF7, that's pretty terrible advice unless OP knows the ins and outs of the original story through osmosis, which I find unlikely since they've never even played a FF game before
Stay buttmad, kid.
>9
>GOAT
Kys.
>7
Overrated shit
Fucking incredible
The rest of the game is pretty much the same deal, if you didn't like the start you'll hate the rest.
4, 6, 7 or X. Then followup with 5, IX and III. Leave XII, VIII, I and II for later. Don't plat XIII or XV they're shit m8.
"Remake" is a sequel, you fucking retards. It's LITERALLY required to FF VII to be finished before you ever touch FFVIIR, otherwise you're FUCKED.
mega loser
No joke, if you want to get introduced to FF, Play Dissidia
after that, play VI, VII or X
3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, tactics, and type-0 are all games I've heard other people say majorally positive things about. My personal favorites are 10 and 6.
I'd say for a begining entry (from the games that I've played) you should play 6, 7, or 10 because their combat doesn't throw any curve balls at you. If you're used to crazy JRPG mechanics you should be comfortable picking up any of them.
IX
Never played 3 so I wouldn't know. Might try it now though.
If you have a tolerance for old RPGs and want to play all of them, play them in release order except II. If you just want to play one or two, pick whichever one sounds fun to you. Personal favorites are VI and IX, but anything past VI is accessible enough to pick up without any problems
The story completely diverges at the end and spoils a bunch of shit you aren't supposed to know about for a good long fucking while
I wish you could recommend 7 Remake like that because the parts of the game that are actually a remake are done fairly well, but you can't, it's explicitly a sequel
If I gets dubs in this post then your recommendation is automatically voided and it's actually VIII. If I get 69 instead, then it's not VII or VIII, but FF II and then entirety of the SaGa franchise from there on. Roll.
People can just play the FF4 Remake instead of the 2D sprite versions.
I'm just getting into the series. Never played them as a kid and I'm 28 so not blinded by nostalgia
>VI
Is really good
>VII
is really good
>playing VIII now
is really weird
8's shit, just skip to 9
>getting dubs on Zig Forums
1,3,5,7,8,9,10 are the good games of the series.
Why does everyone hate VIII?
