Honestly, from what I've seen, everyone would have major whiplash from eggman suddenly becoming actually evil.
It would be nice for the comics and the games finally reach some sort of shared canon too.

Officially, Forces didn't happen.
Officially, SEGA treats the comic as something separate, like Sonic Boom or SatAM. They often veto any explicit references to games. That's why the badniks in the first arc look like HEROS badniks instead of Forces, becuase the comic doesn't technically take place after Forces.
So custom character doesn't exist becuase Forces didn't happen, officially.

All the convoluted and deeply autistic shit he introduced was a deep stain on the comic's reputation, especially when others took over and tried to make sense of it
It really, desperately needed those reboots it got, but it was too late
Outside of excessive shipping being cringe that makes it seem like the writers are projecting their magical realm onto the stories, giving Sonic a definitive sexual relationship- let alone giving him a fanfiction harem of revolving love interests- is kind of missing the point
It's not quite on the level of Donte from DmC, but it just doesn't fit his character
