Torneko's Mystery Dungeon isn't that essential. His chapter in 4 was good enough. You should play it anyway because Mystery Dungeon is great and Chunsoft was an amazing dev.

The problem is more that it's hard getting back into it once I know where to go. I know the flute, where to get the keys, the basic layout of most of the dungeons. So now the last time I played it I found myself mostly just grinding which took a lot of my joy out.

As for 6 I only kind of like it didn't really found myself loving it like other DQ games but I at least felt I had a good time finishing it.

Dragon Quest is a series about charming adventure. DQ5 is more about the main character from birth to adulthood just trying to be the best person he can. Lots of small heartwarming twists over time. Not my favorite but if you are looking for a JRPG with a focus on the life of a main character it's one of the best out there.

I can understand that, but I play DQ1 with enough irregularity and without looking at maps that I spend most of my time vaguely exploring in the correct direction, taking a lot of grind out of the equation via pure exploration.

DQV is a Greek tragedy. You're not going to find many JRPGs like it.

Also it's well paced, has a great monster recruitment system, and is well balanced.

Yeah it's kind of a rough game to go back to if you have just enough memory to know where to go next.

I'm actually more shocked you didn't question my love of DQ7 more than anything.

I may not agree with it but I don't think that's a bad opinion. 7 has a lot going for it. It's Yuji Horii's Sorcerian, more or less. Some of the individual chapters are a bit bland, but as a whole it's a nice collection of small campaigns.
