Best soundtrack and best setting of any final fantasy

IX is an appealing world to live in.
VIII has some things that abide by the rule of cool but that's it.

that said literally every game from IV-X is great and worth playing in its own right. VIII has amazing music, was visually stunning for the system it came out on (and especially compared to its predecessor) and has a great (though maybe not for the right reasons) story and some of the most bizarre and interesting gameplay in the genre

honestly I think VIII did magical realism really well and the setting was pretty decently realized aside from NORG being not explained and way too weird.

Stuff like airwave communications being dead because of Adel's coffin is really fucking cool. I like the concept of a mostly realistic technological world that has regressed about 40 years due to recent events but still tries to carry on.

The sound design as well, but how is that any different from IX, which also looked and sounded better than VIII? Granted the leap from VII to VIII is much bigger, but that makes sense considering VII was their first PS game.

IX definitely looks better but I won't deny that VIII is still gorgeous, especially for the time it was released. I'd still put FFVIII at least top 15 for best looking PS1 games ever made even if IX would be much higher on the list.

Art direction helps a lot too, VIII has truly amazing character design and creature design that holds up.

Not really better, just different. I wouldn't say there's any character or monster in FFIX that's nearly as well designed as Ultimecia in any of her forms, especially her very final form.

Sure that's alright, but the concept of Gardens, everything to do with Rinoa and time kompression just really hurts it imo.

It does have some good ideas however.

Time compression is a great concept though and a very interesting way of using the "villain last resort, I'll kill you all" trope.

XII literally qualifies for worst. They took Ivalice, one of the richest and best worlds in the franchise, and fucking stripped 100% of the life and enjoyablitiy out of it.
You don't even get a Bangaa or Moogle party member, there is no reason for XII to be set in Ivalice whatsoever. Even still the worldbuilding is shit, literally everything interesting about the game's plot and world is only in the last like 2 hours of the game and it's all attached to the main villain.
