P4G is objectively better even though it also added the single worst character with the worst arc in the entire series, and it made the visuals look worse. Vanilla's piss yellow filter added to the atmosphere.
However since Vita can't be emulated yet, you should play Vanilla first before you waste money on a console to play a single game.
