I love SMW to death as 2D Mario.
3D Mario is best when playing Mario 64.

I liked World growing up, but I legit think it's nostalgia. It has the best levels, and the secrets are bloody brilliant, but overall it's more a 4/5 than a 5/5.

Modern games, it's probably Galaxy. It did everything right.

Overall it's easily 3. The momentum and way movement feels, the powerups, the overworld design, the insane two player functionality where you can play competitive Mario Bros (the arcade game) to fight over shit, the insane amount of secrets, it is without a doubt the best 2D platformer ever made, or at least competing with Mega Man X which is the only competition I can think of.

3D is a tough one, though I'll probably have to go with Mario Odyssey. The game looks wonderful, is full of bizarre charming worlds and characters, I love the movement, I love the hat possession mechanic, it just plays like a dream. Shoutouts to 64 and Galaxy 2 though.

All mainline mario games are good actually. It's just solid basic platforming you can't just go wrong

I play it once a year. The controls are better IMO.

World was rushed out in like 10 months to meet SNES launch while 3 was meticulously crafted and polished over the course of 4 years. World is shit and feels terrible, the controls and momentum are all fucked, Mario controls like a brick.

Mario 3 for 2d. World has a lot of things going for it, but I have an issue with the level design. All the levels feel flat and boring, but at least they have a ton of secret exits.

Galaxy for 3d, but the movement is so jipped from previous games.

Donkey Kong '94 is the best platformer in which you control Mario and the best game Miyamoto ever made.
