You can't. 80s and 90s anime and manga basically controlled videogames by proxy. The content was brutal and you had both child and adult characters. But now, the anime and manga is brimming with cutesy soibean shit and the games are reflecting that.

In the context of what I thought it was going to be, being that seemingly the large majority of Japanese characters are high schoolers or some equivalent, I would swing a guess it's mostly because juvenile characters would be easier to write with less complex issues be it emotional, social, etc and lends itself better to illogical situations, like characters letting emotions getting the best of them or them not figuring out traps beforehand despite seeing warning signs.
